The Dutch painter and printmaker Lucas van Leyden, also called Lucas Huyghensz, was born in 1494 in Leiden. His paintings, as well as his prints, reveal a one-of-a-kind pictorial style, even though Lucas is now regarded more as an engraver than a painter.

In 1521 Lucas met Durer in Antwerp and again remained influenced by his art, as can be seen in the same year's Passion series.
The author learned the engraving technique directly from Durer, as evidenced by the production of a couple of engravings after their meeting.

The artist died in Leiden in 1533.
