Born in Rome in 1924, Renzo Vespignani grew up in one of the poorest Roman villages. Here he begins to draw, telling in hundreds of small sheets of the horrors of the occupation, the dirty and pathetic landscape of the extreme suburbs, the ruins of the bombings, the drama of the marginalized, veterans and sciuscià.
For many years, his preferred medium of expression was black and white ink or etching, a "poor", cynical and harsh medium.

Together with the painters Attardi, Catabria, Ferroni, Guerreschi, Guccione, Gianquinto, and the art critics Micacchi, Del Guercio, Morosini, he founded the group "The Pros and the Cons", which immediately became a point of reference for the nascent experiments neofigurals.

The extensive work of an engraver is fundamental for a correct evaluation of his personality: more than three hundred titles in etching, soft varnish and lithography.

He died in 2001 in Rome, his hometown.
